QUALITATIVE SPECIALISTS

ABOUT
BIG Q QUALITATIVE SPECIALISTS
was founded on the belief that producing rigorous qualitative research does not need to feel overwhelming and isolating. Rather, it should feel deeply supported. After years of teaching, supervising, and conducting qualitative research in academia, I recognised that many students, researchers, and organisations needed specialised support beyond traditional academic structures.
Big Q was created to provide that support.

BIG Q FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR

VAN NIEKERK
I am a qualitative researcher, educator and consultant specialising in critical, feminist and decolonial approaches. I hold a PhD in Psychology from the University of Cape Town and completed a four-year postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Psychology, supported by competitive national and institutional research funding. Over the past fifteen years, I have taught, supervised and supported researchers across a wide range of academic and applied contexts. Through Big Q, I combine scholarly expertise with practical guidance to help postgraduate students, academics, universities and organisations navigate complex qualitative research challenges. When you work with Big Q, you work directly with me as Founder and Director. I am particularly passionate about building rigorous, contextually grounded research that contributes meaningfully to knowledge, practice and social justice.
The name Big Q speaks to the distinction between “Big Q” and “small q” qualitative research, reflecting a commitment to qualitative inquiry as more than a set of techniques but a way of thinking about knowledge and methodology.

THE MEANING OF BIG Q
